THEATER

To look for recent theater recommendations, visit our blog page.

For all-in-one ticketing, we recommend visiting www.nytheatre.com, run by the non-profit New York Theatre Experience. It is a comprehensive listing of current and upcoming productions on Broadway, as well as in Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theaters.

(The designations “Off-Broadway” and “Off-Off-Broadway” have to do with the size of the venue and the number of union actors employed—not necessarily the location. A number of excellent Off-Broadway theaters are nestled in among the big Broadway houses near Times Square.)

NYTheatre.com has links to over a dozen different online ticketing agencies, but also see are advice (at right) about ways to purchase tickets in advance or once you are in the city.

Other Ticketing Options

TheatreMania (www.theatremania.com) lists almost all shows currently playing in New York, with links to Ticketmaster, Telecharge, and other online ticket sellers. Broadway.com (www.broadway.com) serves as an excellent clearing house and one-stop shopping site for most Broadway plays and some off-Broadway ones as well.

Half-price, day-of-show tickets are available from the Theater Development Fund (TDF) at their TKTS booths. One is at the northern end of Times Square and the other is at South Street Seaport. Theaters send many of their unsold tickets to TKTS; however, not every show participates, and those that do participate won’t send tickets every day. You just have to take a chance and see what they’re offering.

If you go to the TDF website, www.tdf.org, and click on the TKTS link on the lower left, it will bring up a page that describes the booths in detail. There is also a link on that page to shows offered the previous week so that you can see what is typically available.

Want great seats to the best of Broadway and help a good cause at the same time?

The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation has some of the best seats in town reserved every night of the week and by purchasing them through the foundation, you make a donation to help in their mission of “identifying and encouraging extraordinary young scientists to commit themselves to arresting cancer’s devastating legacy.”

Visit www.cancerresearchfund.org/btHowItWorks.html for more information on how it all works.
